Assignment 1:  The What – When – How Exercise (slide 16).

  • Journal exercise – Reflect on our topic of over parenting and/or avoiding conflicts

Catch yourself!  Can you think of how you may have tried to minimize, distract, diminish, or avoid your child’s challenges this week?  What are the responses you are engaging in?  Write them down!  What were you hoping to accomplish? Was that how your parents responded to you?  Not judging – just observing and understanding!

2.  Is there a pattern or time when this happens?  If so, when?  Write down the times when this happens.  What might trigger it?  Is it related to a time crunch or particular time?  Might you anticipate when this will happen?

3.  What do you think your child is learning when you diminish, minimize, ignore, avoid, or distract from difficult feelings or challenges?
